Early in our interior design career, we had a client break down and cry in a lighting showroom. It was the first and only time that happened, but we sympathized with her. Selecting lighting for a home can be an intimidating task because there are seemingly limitless styles, sizes, and finishes. Whether building a home, remodeling or simply updating a room, lighting plays a crucial role in the design. If you are prepared, lighting decisions will not be overwhelming and can be quite fun! Here are some considerations to help with lighting choices.
1. Types of Lighting – consider the function of lighting in your space. Thoughtful design includes a combination of:
• Ambient – general lighting for overall room illumination, such as recessed can lighting.
• Task-specific lighting – illuminating certain areas and eliminating shadows in those spaces. Examples include under-cabinet lighting, lighted mirrors, and table lamps.
• Decorative – chandeliers and fixtures that set the mood and tone and provide a focal point.
2. Aesthetics – consider the role lighting can play in your home.
• Well-designed lighting can set the tone of a space and make it feel larger or cozier, formal or casual, high-drama or low-key. Your personality can shine through your lighting choices. Determine what statement you want your space to make.
• Light fixtures can emphasize architectural features and draw attention to art or other focal points. Think about which features you would like to highlight.
3. Psychological Impact – Consider the significance of the lighting in your room.
• Proper lighting improves mood and affects our circadian rhythm, influencing health and our sleep patterns.
• Color temperature is the numerical value for measuring color on a warm to cool spectrum, ranging from 1000k-10000k. Generally, 2700-3000k bulbs provide soft, warm, and pleasing light for homes. Warm lighting creates a cozy and inviting feel, while cool lighting makes a room feel vibrant and productive.
4. Energy efficiency – consider the ease and efficiency of modern lighting options.
• Smart lighting – lighting can be integrated with smart home systems, allowing for automation, energy efficiency, and ease of effort.
• LED lighting – Modern LED lighting is long-lasting and energy-efficient.
• Technological advancements- recent technological innovations enhance the adaptability and functionality of lighting systems throughout a home.
Although lighting plays a pivotal role in interior design, selecting fixtures for your home should not be overwhelming. With a bit of thoughtful preparation, you can transform your space by adding just the right lighting.
