The Key to Improved Wellness
By Chelcee Porter, PharmD, IFMCP
One of the most powerful ways to improve your overall health and wellbeing is to focus on your gut health. There is a reason why gut health is such a popular topic in the health and wellness space. Your gut plays a role in almost every single aspect of your health. Your gut is influencing how you think, feel, and respond to different things. Let’s dive into how your gut could be the key to finding wellness!
You can’t talk about gut health without understanding what it does in the first place. Your gut is the powerhouse behind digestion and nutrient absorption. It is in charge of breaking down the food you eat so that the nutrients can be absorbed. If your body can’t break down and absorb nutrients, it can lead to nutrient deficiencies. This can cause symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, or hormone dysfunction.
Problems digesting can lead to an imbalance in your microbiome, the good and bad bacteria in your gut. The microbiome even helps break down our food to be able to absorb nutrients that our gut wouldn’t be able to on its own. It affects so many other processes in the body that when there are changes in the microbiome you start having symptoms. It’s easy to think of symptoms like bloating, stomach pain, and constipation but symptoms outside of the gut can happen too! Like I always say, “When your microbiome is thriving, you are thriving!”
Your gut is a first line of defense when it comes to protecting your body. Imagine your gut like a fence. We don’t want toxins, bacteria, or anything that could cause harm to get absorbed into the blood stream. Your gut acts as a fence to keep the bad guys out but lets the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients be absorbed.
When our gut health is struggling, we usually see what is called a “leaky gut”. This is like if our gut fence had pieces missing, allowing things that we wouldn’t normally absorb to be absorbed. When the bad guys get into the blood stream it can lead to a response from the immune system and inflammation.
Speaking of the immune system, 70% of your immune system is actually found in the gut. A strong gut supports a strong immune system. This is why it is important to take a look at gut health if you are dealing with symptoms like joint pain, skin problems, frequent infections or autoimmune conditions.
This is just a slight glimpse into the power your gut has when it comes to your overall health!
