There’s good reason Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) has gained significant attention in San Antonio and is quickly becoming more popular than ever. MLD detoxifies! While it may be considered a recent addition to bodywork in San Antonio, MLD is common in massage practice along the east coast and numerous regions across the United States and globally. In hospitals, MLD plays a crucial role for post-surgical recovery, to facilitate healing, and in the treatment of chronic conditions like lymphedema.

Why is MLD so important?

In essence, our immune system keeps us healthy by maintaining internal balance and well-being. The immune system plays several vital roles: combating infections and protecting against pathogens; generating antibodies to neutralize harmful viruses and bacteria; identifying abnormal cellular changes, such as cancer; removing dead skin cells and facilitating tissue repair; and developing immunological memory to respond more effectively to future exposures to foreign substances.

What exactly is MLD?

MLD is a gentle, highly specialized massage technique performed by certified therapists and designed to promote physical detoxification by stimulating natural movement of lymph fluid. Chronic inflammation often precedes the development of many diseases, and higher levels of inflammation can increase the risk of serious illnesses. MLD helps bolster the immune system by reducing inflammation throughout the body, which, in turn, can relieve various symptoms. In massage therapy, MLD is commonly used to promote overall well-being, and regular sessions may help address chronic inflammation along with other health concerns. Manual lymphatic drainage promotes immune function by reducing swelling and enhancing the body’s natural defense mechanisms.

What is the best way to increase lymphatic flow?  Movement.

Movement is one of the most effective ways to reduce inflammation. When the body is at rest, the lymphatic system operates slowly. But physical activity stimulates lymph flow. Movement is also facilitated during Manual Lymphatic Drainage as the therapist applies the technique, effectively promoting the drainage of fluid and enhancing the therapeutic benefits. MLD uses gentle, rhythmic strokes to stimulate the release of fluids and has a calming soothing sensation throughout entire body. The effects of MLD are caused by generating pressure in the tissue, stretching the skin, and alternating between pressure and suction. MLD reduces anxiety by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, the “rest and digest” nervous system—which lowers cortisol levels and triggers a profound relaxation response. Using gentle, rhythmic, and light touch, MLD improves flow, reduces tissue inflammation, and can release stored tension and emotional trauma. As the swelling decreases, anxiety also subsides.

When MLD is applied to the upper body, it reduces sinus inflammation, headaches and even smooths out wrinkles. For the lower body, therapists usually focus on “clearing” upper areas like the abdomen first to create a path for fluid to move from the legs, preventing backups. MLD of the lower body eliminates swelling in the legs and feet, helps reduce pain and the feeling of heaviness or tightness in the legs. For both upper and lower extremities, the reduced volume and tightness in the limbs can increase mobility. MLD can even relieve menstrual discomforts of bloating, retention of fluid, tenderness and pain linked to PMS. As MLD reduces inflammation and removes excess fluid from tissues, it supports a more comfortable menstrual cycle.

What are the benefits of MLD?

Maintaining a healthy and clean lymphatic system is essential for both physical and mental well-being. Our minds and bodies work in unison to achieve optimal health. Mindfulness and Body Awareness are now two of our greatest allies in combating modern stressors. MLD and Massage Therapy, with their different methods, have evolved into our ‘safe zone’— a sanctuary for easing stress, calming the body’s rhythms, increasing our vibrational energy and promoting a healthy outlook on life. Profound relaxation is only one benefit. Key benefits of regular MLD therapy encompass enhanced immune function, accelerated healing, reduced stress and anxiety, improved sleep, heightened inner focus, detoxification, greater productivity, and better overall health and well-being.

Today, MLD continues to flourish in San Antonio and in Alamo Heights.
