Helping Shape the Future of Downtown
April Bailey never has to worry about morning rush hour traffic. She can simply step outside her front door of The Thompson and make the short walk to her downtown office at Amegy Bank on Convent Street, where she is Regional President of the bank’s Central Texas Region.
Since relocating from Houston three years ago with her husband and two teenage children to help expand Amegy Bank’s footprint across San Antonio, Austin, and New Braunfels, Bailey has fallen in love with the Alamo City’s vibrant downtown area and all it has to offer.
“I’m so glad we made the decision to live downtown,” she said. “We’re so close to the Riverwalk, San Fernando Cathedral, shops, and restaurants. And the people are so friendly.”
Bailey, however, believes the downtown area still has great potential to grow and improve, making it an even more attractive destination for locals and tourists. So she’s happy that Amegy Bank is doing its part to make it happen.
Amegy Bank, for instance, recently partnered with the nonprofit Centro San Antonio and the City of San Antonio’s Trees Everywhere program in which 1,000 new trees will be planted throughout downtown by 2036 to reduce urban heat and improve walkability. Amegy Bank has also served as both a sponsor and presenter for the San Antonio Business Journal and Centro San Antonio’s Downtown Next series, which highlights major redevelopment projects and explores strategies for downtown revitalization and urban growth in San Antonio.
Additionally, Amegy Bank offers part of its office space to nonprofits, businesses and other corporations as a meeting space, proving itself to be a good corporate neighbor. “We want to be a hub where people can come, collaborate and work on issues,” Bailey said, adding that she would like to see more corporate companies move downtown.
Meanwhile, Bailey has been with Amegy Bank for the past 22 years and began her career through the Banker Development Training Program. Since then, she has built an extensive background in commercial banking. Her experience covers a range of industries, including manufacturing, distribution, energy, transportation, construction, and maritime.
As Regional President, she oversees commercial and corporate banking, private banking, and retail banking in the Central Texas markets.
“The culture, people, and environment are why I’ve stayed here for so long. It’s also where I have raised my family,” she said. “The opportunities to grow and lead others helped me realize how much I enjoy leadership and supporting others in their success.”
Bailey believes she has found her niche in commercial banking, especially since it combines working with people and constantly learning something new. “You spend a lot of time meeting with management teams, asking questions and learning about their business,” she explained.
Active in the community, Bailey has served in numerous board and leadership positions throughout Texas. Her past service includes serving on the Executive Committee as Treasurer of the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, as Treasurer-Secretary and Executive Board Member of the Greater Houston Port Bureau, and as a member of the Greater Houston Partnership’s Executive Women’s Partnership Steering Committee. She also previously served on the boards of Teach for America Houston and the University of St. Thomas.
Today, April continues her dedication to the community and leadership development as a board member of Junior Achievement of South Texas, a member of the Executive Committee of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, and a board member of YPO San Antonio.
On a personal note, she and her husband, Kevin, have become empty nesters. Their daughter, Isa, attends The University of Texas at Austin, while their son, Jack, just began his fall semester at Babson College in Boston.
