There’s something about a spicy margarita that just works—especially in San Antonio. It’s bright, refreshing, a little fiery and impossible to ignore. And during Hispanic Heritage Month, it feels like the perfect time to celebrate one of our favorite combinations: tequila, lime and chile.
1. Start with the good stuff.
A great spicy margarita doesn’t need to be complicated. Start with a quality blanco tequila and fresh-squeezed lime juice. Blanco is tequila in its freshest expression, letting the flavors of agave shine through—and that crisp character is exactly what you want alongside citrus and heat. Add your favorite chile, whether it’s fresh jalapeño, serrano or something a little more adventurous, and you have the foundation for a fantastic margarita.
2. There’s a reason we crave lime + spice.
That irresistible combination isn’t just in your head—or your cocktail glass. Capsaicin, the compound that gives chiles their heat, activates the receptors that perceive warmth and spice. Pair that sensation with the bright acidity of fresh lime, and you get a lively contrast that keeps your palate coming back for another sip. Sweet, sour, spicy, refreshing—it hits all the right notes.
3. Pick your blanco.
Three of my favorites for spicy margaritas are Pantalones Blanco, LALO Blanco and Mijenta Blanco. Each brings its own personality, while still giving lime and chile plenty of room to shine.
So, this Hispanic Heritage Month, raise a glass to a combination we love. Because sometimes, a little heat makes everything more fun.
