Everyone is talking about The Sports and Entertainment District, often referred to as Project Marvel. So naturally, I wanted to understand what it actually means—not simply the headlines, but the bigger vision behind it. To answer that question, I went to one of the city’s most thoughtful and influential civic strategists.

Meet Shanon Miller, who has been part of City staff since 2008 and is an accomplished leader whose work lives at the intersection of preservation, progress, culture, and downtown transformation.

Her influence spans some of San Antonio’s most significant initiatives involving downtown development, housing, infrastructure, transportation, entertainment, tourism, and cultural investment. In a city experiencing rapid growth, revitalization, and generational change, Shannon has become one of the guiding forces helping shape what San Antonio becomes next.

You may not immediately recognize her name—but chances are, you have experienced her impact. It can be seen in restored historic buildings, revitalized neighborhoods, cultural preservation efforts, downtown momentum, sustainability initiatives, and the evolving vision for the future of the Alamo City. From preservation projects and downtown revitalization efforts to Holidays on Houston Street, the Power of Preservation Foundation, the annual PROM fundraiser, the Legacy Business Program, Living Heritage initiatives, and major redevelopment conversations, her fingerprints can be found across projects that continue redefining how San Antonio grows while honoring what makes it special.

The newest chapter—the Sports and Entertainment District—represents far more than new buildings or entertainment venues.

It is a transformational vision that seeks to create a more connected, vibrant, walkable downtown experience—one that thoughtfully blends sports, culture, entertainment, hospitality, housing, green space, transportation, business development, and community life into a more unified urban center.

At its heart, the vision asks a much bigger question: how do you grow a city without losing its soul?

For Shanon, that question is at the center of everything she does.

Simply put, this nationally respected civic connector is moving in every direction at once—helping ensure San Antonio evolves while preserving the spirit, history, authenticity, and cultural richness that make this community extraordinary.

When your days are filled with strategy sessions, development meetings, downtown visioning, public partnerships, site visits, presentations, and helping shape the future of an entire city, what type of bag keeps Shanon one step ahead of it all?

Her answer perfectly reflects the woman carrying it. Shanon’s sturdy tote isn’t just a bag—it’s mission control.

Inside you’ll find the tools necessary for a leader whose days can move from construction sites to City Hall, from preservation meetings to public presentations, and from walking tours to evening events.

Her essentials include:

  • Laptop
  • iPad
  • Water bottle
  • Instant hydration packets
  • Chargers and cords
  • Notebook and pens
  • Hair clip for those moments when it’s time to roll up her sleeves and get to work
  • Comfortable tennis shoes for site visits and walking meetings
  • Heels for presentations, public events, and community gatherings

In many ways, the tennis shoes and heels tell the story best.

One moment she may be walking through a historic property, touring a redevelopment site, or participating in a downtown planning discussion. The next, she is presenting ideas, engaging stakeholders, or helping guide conversations about San Antonio’s future.

Whether she is wearing tennis shoes or heels, Shanon is helping create a downtown that feels authentic, inclusive, energized, and unmistakably San Antonio.

Thank you, Shanon, for carrying so much—and for helping guide San Antonio into its next chapter.

Shanon’s tips for high-energy people in all directions…

  • Always carry comfortable shoes.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Keep a charger nearby.
  • Have a hair clip handy.
  • Be ready to pivot.
  • Listen more than you talk.
  • Never underestimate the power of showing up prepared.
