Fall in Comfort offers visitors a refreshing combination of seasonal Hill Country beauty, from hay bales and pumpkins to Longhorn cattle, paired with small-town charm.

Settled by German pioneers in 1854, the town has retained much of its German heritage, with nearly the entire downtown listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  This rich history provides a wonderful setting for holiday activities that appeal to visitors of all ages.

Merchants in Comfort give women throughout the area a great excuse to get an early start on their holiday shopping with Diva Day on November 7 and Girls Night Out on November 10. With Comfort’s historic district decked out in holiday finery, friends gather for holiday shopping, sipping, and celebration.

“The festive, yet relaxed, ambiance of Girls Night Out puts women in the holiday spirit,” said Julie Kuykendall with the Comfort Merchants Association, event presenter. “It’s our way of pampering women shoppers and helping them jump-start their holiday shopping.”

Opportunities for fun holiday shopping continue at 8th Street Market, a multi-dealer shopping community with an eclectic mix of architectural, industrial, repurposed, vintage and antique pieces.  The Market will host Wine Down Wednesday on October 14, November 10, and December 9 for fun, relaxed after-hours shopping.  Spirited shopping at the Market continues with the Christmas Extravaganza on November 2 and the Christmas Market on November 28.

Mr. & Mrs. Claus

The centerpiece of the holiday season in Comfort is Christmas in Comfort, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.  Always held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 28 this year, the event is one of the most popular holiday events in the Hill Country, transforming the Historic District into a festive holiday destination.  The event features more than 130 arts, crafts, and food vendors, live entertainment, and lots of family fun.  Admission is free.

After a day of celebrating in the Historic District, everyone gathers at Seventh and High Streets for Christmas carols and the lighting of the Comfort Community Christmas tree at 6 p.m. Weinachten Lichter, the magical lighted night parade, then begins.  A sparkling fireworks display immediately after the parade ends the event.

Fall fun in Comfort includes food and drink, too. With cooler temperatures, visitors are drawn to Steak Night Social at Shopping With Siobain.  Guests bring their favorite protein to grill over flaming, Texas-sized mesquite wood pits.  Sides, desserts, and beverages are available for purchase.  Live entertainment by local artists completes the evening.

“It is like having your own backyard BBQ without having to do the work,” said Siobhain Anders, owner of Shopping with Siobhain.  Steak Night Social is held the second and fourth  Thursday of the month from 6 to 9 p.m. Entry fee is $10 per person.  You will find Steak Night Social at 205 State Highway 27.  For reservations and more information, visit Shopping with Siobhain on Facebook.

For those visitors wanting to make a toast to the season, Comfort’s wineries are great places to celebrate.  Singing Water Vineyards, a scenic winery located just outside Comfort, offers beautiful wines and daily food offerings along with live music on a regular basis.  Performances in October include A Tribute to Fleetwood Mac and a Tribute to Jimmy Buffett’s The Lost Shaker of Salt.

Bending Branch Winery, just south of town, specializes in bold red wines and combines old-world traditions with modern techniques to produce award-winning wines. The winery also offers a rare bourbon tasting flight.

Comfort has wine tasting opportunities in the Historic District, too. Located on Front Street is the Newsom Vineyards Tasting Room, featuring Texas-grown wine selections, and Ursa at Branch on High, a collaborative tasting room with California wines from Ursa Vineyards alongside Bending Branch selections.
